Introduction
Second Course ("we", "us", or "our") operates the Second Course mobile application ("Service"), which connects college students with leftover food from campus events, dining services, and organizations. This page explains what personal data we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices you have.
By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
Information We Collect
Account Information
When you create an account, we collect:
- Email Address: Used to create, verify, and sign in to your account. Student accounts require a verified email address from a supported university (currently San Diego State University, UC San Diego, and Southwestern College).
- Display Name: The name you provide for your profile.
- Campus: The university your account belongs to.
- Role: Whether you use the app as a Student, a Poster (an organization or individual sharing food), or both.
- Profile Photo: Only if you sign in with Google, where Google Sign-In is available.
Organization Information
If you register to post food on behalf of an organization, we also collect:
- Your organization's name, description, type, and approximate member count
- An optional photo you provide as proof of your organization
Content You Create
- Food Posts: Titles, descriptions, photos, pickup location, building and room, availability times, portion counts, tags, and allergen or dietary information.
- Claims: Records of food portions you claim, or that are claimed on your posts.
- Chat Messages: Messages you send in a food post's chat.
Usage and Device Information
- Push Notification Tokens: Device tokens used to send you push notifications.
- App Activity: Which posts you view, and when and on which platform (iOS, Android, or web) you use the app.
- Notification Preferences: Your choices about push and email notifications.
Location
We do not collect your device's location. The only location information in the Service is the pickup location a poster chooses for a food post.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and maintain the Service
- Create and authenticate your account and verify your university email address
- Review organization registrations
- Show food posts from posters to students on the same campus
- Send push notifications and, if you opt in, email notifications about new food posts, claims, and reminders
- Process claims and track how many portions remain
- Measure the Service's impact (such as food claimed) and improve the Service
Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored with Google Firebase (Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Storage, and Cloud Functions). All data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS. We use reasonable security measures to protect your information, but no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
Who Can See Your Information
Visible to Other Users on Your Campus
- Your display name or organization name on food posts you create
- Photos, descriptions, and details of food you post
- Post availability and claimed portion counts
- Messages you send in a post's chat
Private to Your Account
The following is visible only to you and to Second Course administrators:
- Your email address
- Your push notification tokens and notification preferences
- Your role, and your organization registration details
- Which posts you have viewed
Notifications
We send push notifications about:
- Students: New food posts on your campus, and reminders before food you claimed expires
- Posters: When your posts are claimed, when they are half full or full, when they expire, and reminders before they expire
Email notifications about new food posts are sent only if you turn them on. You can change your notification preferences in the Profile tab of the app at any time. Push notifications also require your permission in your device settings.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information. We share it only:
- With other users: as described in "Who Can See Your Information" above
- With service providers who run the Service on our behalf, listed under "Third-Party Services" below
- When required by law or legal process
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access: Request a copy of your personal data
- Update: Update your profile information in the app at any time
- Delete: Delete your account and associated data (see below)
- Opt Out: Turn off push or email notifications in the app

Account Deletion
You can delete your Second Course account in the app: open the Profile tab, tap "Delete Account", and enter your password to confirm.
You can also request deletion without the app by emailing daniel@secondcourse.co from the email address on your account. We will delete your account within 30 days and confirm by email.
When your account is deleted, we permanently delete:
- Your profile and sign-in account
- Your food posts and their photos
- Claims you made, and claims on your posts
- Your organization registration and proof photo
- Your push notification tokens and notification preferences
Messages you sent in post chats and records of which posts you viewed are not removed automatically. To have them deleted as well, email us at the address above. We may also keep information where required for legal or legitimate business purposes.
Children's Privacy
The Service is intended for college and university students, staff, and campus organizations. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the new version on this page and update the "Last Updated" date. Changes are effective when they are posted.
